About LevizAlbania project

LevizAlbania is a project that aims to strengthen the local democracy in Albania through the engagement of civil society actors and individuals as the champions of democracy.

LevizAlbania supports local democracy across the country by cultivating a locally rooted civil society, which increase the demand good governance in local level, through:

  • Comprehensive decision making
  • Supervision of local government
  • Transparency
  • Responsibility
  • Accountability
  • Monitoring the quality of public services

Rapid Response is another important instrument of LevizAlbania project, which supports the initiatives of civil society organizations and individuals related to causes or emergency issues that are threaten by time factor. Rapid Response is an opportunity to address the needed intervention through civic actions, appraised with a simplified procedure, in order to respond in time and in the best interest of the situation/causes. 

Furthermore, LevizAlbania undertakes strategic projects and national-level advocacy to enable a suitable environment for an improved and sustained local democracy. 

LevizAlbania is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and implemented by a consortium of three successful Albanian organizations, "Open Society Foundation for Albania", "Partners Albania for Change and Development" and "Co-PLAN".

Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC)

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), represented by the Swiss Embassy, supports the strengthening of local democracy, democratisation and decentralisation in Albania. The goal is for any citizen to obtain betters services. SDC is one of the lead donors in Albania in the area of local governance. Through LevizAlbania, Switzerland promotes and mobilises civil society to play a more active role in increasing quality of local governance.

CONSORTIUM IMPLEMENTING “LEVIZALBANIA” PROJECT

Open Society Foundation for Albania

Open Society Foundation for Albania is the number one donor in Albania since the transition from a mono-party rule. Since 1994, it disbursed and managed over 9,000 local grants for civil society and public institutions, amounting to EUR 47 million. In addition to grants, Open Society Foundation for Albania engages in direct and indirect advocacy at national and local level and interacts with the whole media spectrum in the country.

Partners Albania

Partners Albania has been the lead civic actor since 2001, specialised in civil society capacity building and in the advancement and mobilisation of voters (e.g. youth and women). It works extensively at local level and introduced the innovative notion of ideas competitions in Albania. Partners Albania has been at the forefront of efforts to create a more favourable environment for Albanian civil society organisations.

Co-PLAN

Co-Plan has worked extensively since 1997 on the local governance reform and accountability programmes. This organisation has consolidated experience in participatory budgeting and planning, local finance management, urban reform mechanisms and transparency. It conveys the ability to understand and transmit citizen groups the internal mechanism and functioning of local governance. This enables Co-Plan to match at best offer to demand in its intervention approaches.
