SUMMERY OF THE PROPOSAL

Due to COVID-19 pandemic the education system faced an unusual situation, especially for the elementrary school students who had just started. Being unfamiliar with the educational system, a child's contact with the teacher was replaced by the contact with their parents. Despite the efforts made by parents, and the efforts made by teachers, the two-month isolation period and later online learning created many difficulties for this age group. September 2020 did not find this age group in the first grade, which had already finished, and it also found it unprepared for the second grade, facing a new program with more advanced knowledge. Parents and teachers state that first-grade students of the 2019-2020 academic year had difficulties in assimilating the curricula, often showed a lack of desire to attend school, and had insufficient social contact with their peers. This means they are not able to consider school as a place where learning and entertainment take place. Our intervention with the Summer School "Learning and Entertainment" is a solution that will help in the elimination of the shortcomings of the learning process for students living in areas with low internet access and from families with economic problems who were unable to provide a smartphone or a computer to their children. The Summer School "Learning and Entertainment" is going to create a suitable environment for the social and emotional development of this age group.

PURPOSE OF INTERVENTION:

The purpose of this intervention is to contribute to the elimination of the gap that has been created during the the COVID-19 pandemic in the cognitive and social skills of first-grade students of the 2019-2020 academic year in the Administrative Units of  Ballagat and Hysgjokaj, as areas with low internet access, and families with economic difficulties living in the city of Lushnja. The Summer School "Learning and Entertainment" will bring the community of parents closer to the school, making it a more open institution, and make parents important actors in contributing to the well-growth of their children. During these days, children will have a combination of lessons and psycho-social activities. In the following days, children will also engage in activities that promote civic engagement and contribution to the community. Saturdays will also be called the "Community Day" during which the parents of the pupils are going to stay together during entertainment and educational activities.

OBJECTIVES ON INTERVENTION:

- Eliminating the learning gap of 60 pupils attending the Summer School "Learning and Entertainment" through training on the main competencies in reading, and mathematics.

- Equipping 60 participating pupils in the Summer School with knowledge on social life, community life, health education, and children’s world through activities that foster the social and emotional development of children aged 6-8 years.

EXPECTED RESULTS:

- Having 60 children, belonging to the age group of 6-8 years old,  divided into 3 classes, trained on the main learning concepts in listening, speaking, writing, linguistic and mathematical knowledge, as well as social competencies;

- Making 60 families aware of their role in children’s education;

- Promoting volunteerism as an important element of civic engagement by engaging 15 young people part of the "Lushnja Next Generation" informal group.

BENEFICIARIES:

- 60 children belonging to the age group of 6-8 years old attending the Summer School "Learning and Entertainment";

- 60 families whose children will attend the Summer School "Learning and Entertainment";

- 15 young volunteers part of the "Lushnja Next Generation" informal group as well as communities in the Administrative Units of Ballagat and Hysgjokaj, and in the City of Lushnja.

MAIN ACTIVITIES:

1. Written consent of the parents for their children to attend the Summer School,

2. Project presentation and the signing of a Cooperation Agreement with the Education Office in Lushnja;

3. Prepare the curricula of the Summer School for the reading, writing, and mathematics modules;

4. Opening of the Summer School in the Administrative Units of Ballagat and Hysgjokaj and in the City of Lushnja;

5. Organising the Summer School in July - August 2021;

6. Closing event of the Summer School, distributing the Certificates of Attendance.
